There are 15 blue flag beaches in Bulgaria with an “eco-certificate” !
The blue flag certification is a certificate given by the Foundation for Environmental Education and attests that a beach, sustainable boating tourism or a marina meet their high standards.
update August 2020: The places are analysed taking into consideration the quality of the water and sand, the provision of services, the environmental education and information.
The certificate is issued on a yearly basis and is renewed each season.
A place which has this certificate means that it has high environmental and quality standards.
All over Bulgaria, there are 15 such beaches, some of them are new on the list while others are here for years.
Top Blue flag beaches in Bulgaria
From the total number of 15 beaches 5 of them are more popular and beautiful:
1. Beach Pomorie East
This long strip of sand is located close to Burgas, with grey sand and warm and crystal clear water. The bottom of the sea, right near the shore is sandy so you don’t have to wear water shoes if you want to enter the water for a swim.
Sunbeds and umbrellas from the beach could be rented at a cost of about 7 leva per piece. There are also tents on the beach to rent if you want.
On the beach, you can find changing rooms, toilets and even massage tents. Bars and restaurants are spread all along the beach, so you have enough places to choose from.
2. Beach Sveti Vlas East and Beach Sveti Vlas New best beaches in Bulgaria
These two wonderful beaches are located in Sveti Vlas resort and are the most suitable beaches for families. From the city centre to the beach you can take a walk and everything is at a walking distance from the beach. The restaurants and the bars are very easy to reach and the quality of food is good and the view is very relaxing.
Regarding the accommodation, you don’t have to worry! The prices are very reasonable and you can find all types of accommodation: from apartments with self-catering to fancy hotels, just see which one is the right for you!

3. Beach Nessebar South
Located in one of the most beautiful villages from Bulgaria, Nessebar is a small and cosy village famous for its ancient ruins and narrow streets. The beach from the south part of the village was rated for years as one of the most beautiful sand strips from Bulgaria and has everything you could wish for a perfect day at the beach: clear waters, comfy sunbeds and colourful umbrellas.
Of course, you have to pay for them a small fee but this is common in Bulgaria and the prices are really low.
Right near the beach, there are many places where you can eat or drink something while admiring the view!
4. Golden Sands beach
Golden Sands is a major resort at Black Sea Beach and has one of the most beautiful beaches in Bulgaria. The blue flag awarded beach is famous for its soft sandy beach, crystal clear water and moderate waves. I mean, it is the ideal place to spend your holiday with your family and kids. If you are the active kind of person, then you should know that there is a great place to practice water activities: diving, parachuting, paragliding and waterskiing.
Most of the hotels are located close to the beach while being within a walking distance. There is a wide range of rooms available in the area, including apartments and 5-star hotels. Just be careful and book in advance because it is a very popular destination among European tourists!

5. Sunny beach North and South
Famous for its watersports and nightlife, Sunny Beach is one of the most popular resorts among young people searching for fun and water activities. It has two Blue flag sand strips with great facilities and good quality restaurants and bars.
The places are very touristic and crowded so be prepared for that! Some hotels have their own beach sector where they have sunbeds and umbrellas just for their customers, while other sand strips are public, but you have to pay if you want to rent an umbrella and a sunbed. But like I said earlier, the prices are low so worth the effort.
