Where is Mazunte Oaxaca, and how I got there

Mazunte Oaxaca is nestled along the picturesque coast of southern Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca.

To embark on my adventure to this tranquil pueblo magico, I first made my way to Huatulco International Airport.

From there, I took a scenic drive and rented a car to reach the coastal paradise of Mazunte, immersing myself in the breathtaking landscapes and the promise of a memorable experience.

I found driving in Mexico safe as long as you respect the safety rules: don’t be aggressive in traffic, don’t drive at night, and follow the common sense rules.

Another option, which some travelers choose, is to take a bus ride from Oaxaca City, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the journey as you make your way to this hidden gem.

The bus is known as pasajero and goes from one town to another along the Oaxaca coastline.

Actually, it is not a usual bus, but it is a pickup truck with a large tent on the back and generally, it is used by locals.

Don’t wait in a bus stop, just head to the main rod and wait for the Pasajero, as it normally runs every 15 minutes.

This pasajero comes even from Puerto Escondido to Mazunte and from Puerto Angel, another beautiful town located in the Oaxaca state.

Regardless of the route you take, the journey to Mazunte sets the stage for an unforgettable exploration of this enchanting destination.

It is a good town to set your base and to take day trips to the nearby beaches and attractions.

A Day of Adventure

My adventure continued with a boat tour around Punta Cometa.

I also joined a birdwatching tour in the nearby mangroves and lagoons, spotting various species of birds in their natural habitat.

The eco-diversity of Mazunte was truly astounding.

Sunset Serenity at Punta Cometa

One day, later in the afternoon, I made my way to Punta Cometa once again.

The journey began in the late afternoon as I made my way through the charming streets of Mazunte towards Punta Cometa.

The well-marked trail leading to the promontory was a nature lover’s dream, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of birdsong.

It was a moderate hike, with a well-maintained path that ensured a comfortable trek.

As I approached the cliff’s edge, the vast expanse of the Pacific Coast came into view, and the anticipation of the impending sunset filled the air with excitement.

Finding a spot on the cliffs, I settled in, surrounded by fellow travelers who had embarked on the same quest for nature’s beauty.

As the sun began its descent towards the horizon, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant hues – fiery oranges, deep purples, and shades of pink painted across the sky.

The serenity of the moment, punctuated only by the sound of crashing waves below, left me in awe.

The hike to Punta Cometa was not just about reaching a destination; it was a journey through nature’s wonders and a serene communion with the elements.

It was a testament to the magical experiences that Mazunte had to offer, making it an unforgettable adventure that I will cherish forever.

Taking a boat tour to see whales and dolphins

The boat tour was led by knowledgeable local guides who shared their passion for marine life.

They equipped us with fascinating insights into the habits and habitats of the ocean’s most enigmatic inhabitants.

As we ventured farther from the shore, the vastness of the ocean unfolded before us, creating a sense of awe and wonder.

It wasn’t long before the first sighting – a group of playful dolphins frolicking in the boat’s wake. Their acrobatic displays and joyful leaps filled the air with infectious delight.

The real highlight of the tour, however, was our encounter with a magnificent humpback whale.

The sight of this gentle giant breaching the surface and sending plumes of water into the air left everyone onboard in awe.

The sheer size and grace of the whale were a testament to the wonders of the marine world.

If you have seasick, as I did, then before jumping into the boat, take some pills.

Otherwise, you cannot enjoy this tour, which will be a waste of money and time.
