Travel Insurance. Do you need it ?
Well, if we are honest, whenever we think about insurance for travel, it is one of those inconvenient questions that pop up in our head: “do I really have to buy it ?”, or “how much money should I spend on this insurance?”.
These two questions are the one people ask themselves most often when they plan a holiday, or just before they get to leave on their travel trip in a foreign country.
We travel a lot and during the last years, we have visited more than 32 countries all over the world. We always try to obtain the lowest price for our plane tickets and at the same time get a low price for our hotel or accommodation, but when it comes to being covered we never buy cheap holiday insurance.
Here is why we don’t buy cheap insurance, and we also discourage you to cheap out on your travel health insurance.
Why you should buy a travel insurance ?
We never had to cancel a big trip in a far foreign country at our own expenses, we never lost our luggage, our travel gear was never broken beyond repair, never got stolen or delayed, we can say that we were lucky enough by now to not have encountered any pickpockets thiefs during our travels.
So we asked ourselves isn’t this holiday insurance just money thrown out the window… ?
We immediately remembered how we did not spent any money, not even a penny, during our trip in Caribbean in Dominican Republic when my husband got partial deafened from what proved to be a wax plug that formed in his ear because very long airplane flight and because of air currents (as the doctors stated at that time).
The medical bill was about 1.200 USD for transport to the nearest hospital which was 30 km away from our resort, a medical consult and the medical procedure to dissolve that wax and the medical treatment received for the following days so we can fly back home.
There was a high risk of getting deaf if we decided to fly back home and not to go to a doctor right away.
We did not pay a single cent, because our travel assurance covered all the expenses for us.
We also remembered about that stone that cracked our windshield in our holiday in Tenerife where we also did not have to pay anything because the insurance covered the cost for the windshield replacement.
We almost forgot these events, especially because we did not have to pay anything, as our trip insurance covered all the expenses for us.
What type of travel insurance is the best?
When you choose your holiday insurance, the most important thing it should be covered is your health, and any related medical expenses.
Depending on what type of activities you will do during your travel, consider buying a travel health insurance that will also cover the water sports if you go on an exotic island or winter sports if you go skiing in winter or on the high mountains.
You should also consider covering your travel gear, especially if you travel with expensive travel gear and electronics like your laptop, photo camera, video camera, phone, ipad, etc.
Another important cover is the trip cancellation that will reimburse you the money already spent by you for your future trip or holiday.
