5 stunning Hot Springs San Miguel de Allende Mexico

Hot springs San Miguel de Allende are popular attractions for those looking for pampering and relaxation in a natural environment.

The beautiful San Miguel de Allende is one of the most popular cities in Mexico, and tourists from all over the world rush here all year round.

It is classified as Pueblo Magico, a UNESCO Heritage site with impressive baroque architecture and ancient vibes.

Travel +Leisure Magazine ranked this city as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

There are a lot of things to do in San Miguel de Allende, including walking tours along the city, visiting the baroque churches, and some art galleries.

Nothing is more romantic and beautiful than watching the sunset from a rooftop while sipping a cocktail.

So make sure you visit San Miguel de Allende when come to Mexico.

But San Miguel de Allende’s surroundings are equally beautiful, packed with many resorts and hot springs where you can soak in natural hot water.

The hot springs or aquas termales as Mexicans call them, are being heated by remaining activity in the Taxco-San Miguel de Allende fault system.

Water temperature is around 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and more than 130 mineral hot springs have been identified in the area.

All these hot springs are famous for their water with healing properties, so you must visit at least one of the springs listed below.

The hot springs from the below list are not in the wild, but they are extremely accessible to everybody.

I prepare a list of the best hot springs in the area ( see below the table of contents), and all you have to do is pick the one you like most and plan a relaxing day trip to it.

The best hot springs near San Miguel de Allende

1. The Mayan Baths

The Mayan Baths offer a completely different experience than all the geothermal pools in the area.

This fantastic place is also known as Albercas Subterraneas Mayan Baths.

It is more exclusive and certainly more expensive than other San Miguel de Allende hot springs.

These geothermal baths are open to the public only on weekends, Saturdays, and Sundays.

During weekdays, they are available for private rental only.

The Mayan Baths is an adults-only destination; you can visit it only after buying a predetermined package.

2. La Gruta San Miguel de Allende hot springs

La Gruta Spa is considered the most popular hot spring destination in San Miguel de Allende, a perfect place for families.

It is about 20 20-minute drive from the city and has a beautiful recreational pool with some spa services.

The dome shape of the inside pool is very interesting, but you cannot stay there for too long because of the steam.

Also if you have heart conditions make sure you consult your doctor before visiting this hot spring.

The site is quite large, featuring four hot springs of different temperatures that are hidden in the lush vegetation.

Hot springs description

La Gruta offers quite a rustic experience so don’t come here with high expectations.

There are two main pools on the property and a kids’ pool.

All the pools are very well-maintained, although you might spot leaves and twigs sometimes in the water.

Thanks to the man-made stone tunnel that leads to a steamy pool, the place is considered one of the most Instagramable hot springs in the area.

All the pools from the property are made from concrete and fed by the hot springs located in the area.

Near the pools, you will find sunloungers to perfect your tan.

For the best spot, you need to arrive here early in the morning, as the place might become really crowded during the day.

Tables and umbrellas are spread across the property, perfect places where you can grab a bite from the on-site restaurant or hang out.

The on-site restaurant is quite affordable, and the portions are big.

You can find rice, Mexican food, quesadillas, and mole.

It is not the most delicious food I have eaten in Mexico, but it is good.

Without any doubt, La Gruta is the right choice if you are looking for a family day out and your standards are not very high.

3. Xote Waterpark

Other beautiful hot springs San Miguel de Allende for families is Xote Waterpark.

It is located about 20 minute drive from San Miguel de Allende and is perfect for families with kids.

The water park is not very large; it features three large waterslides, several thermal pools and splash pads, designated areas for smaller kids, and some water games.

On-site, a restaurant serves mostly Mexican food, but you can bring your own food and rent a BBQ.

Camping facilities are available at Xote Waterpark if you want to spend the night here, but I would skip this experience if I were you.

The property has no locker facilities, and the conditions are very rustic.

The price for camping is 600 MXN per person, per night.

It is better to stay in a hotel in San Miguel de Allende and drive to the hot springs.

4. Escondido Place Hot Springs

Escondido Place is another popular San Miguel de Allende hot springs, located 20 minutes drive from the city on the half way to the town of Dolores Hidalgo.

In terms of facilities, this hot spring is located somewhere in the middle, between La Gruta, which is quite rustic, and the high-end Mayan Baths.

On-site, you will find three thermal pools, out of which one is in an open area, and two are indoor.

There is also a swimming pool with sunloungers where you can relax and take a break.

In addition to this, Escondido Place features a hotel, a spa, a shop, a restaurant, picnic areas with BBQ, and four ponds.

Site description

The property is quite large, with plenty of bathrooms, changing rooms, and lockers.

There are also some really nice alleys that go to the ponds, shaded by the trees.

The on-site spa is located in a tranquil corner of the beautiful garden, and here, you can find a menu with lots of massages and treatments.

It is a very popular place, so make sure you make your reservation in advance.

There is also a hotel on the property, but the prices are a little high for what you get.

The on-site restaurant serves Mexican food, but you can also bring your food and rent a BBQ to prepare it.

Escondido Place is very Instagramable, with beautiful cabanas near the pools, egg chairs spread across the property, and a long list of treatments at the local spa.

When it comes to the water temperature, I can say the Escondido Place is one of the coolest in the area.

The water is lukewarm, and if you want a hot experience, you must visit the man-made caves.

All in all, the property is quite large, featuring ten different pools of different sizes and three hot caves.

5. Grutas Tolantongo

Visiting Grutas Tolantongo is not that easy, but worth the effort.

I discovered this place when I was visiting Queretaro, and after seeing a few photos, I knew I needed to go there.

The next day, I jumped into a rented car, and I was fascinated by this place when I arrived at my destination.

Places like Escondido Place or La Gruta Spa can be reached by bus.

In San Miguel de Allende search for the purple buses that leave from El Porton, which is located between Hotel Live Aqua and Calzada de la Aurora.

Look for the ones with Santuario or Atotonilco sign.

The cost of a one-way trip is around 20 MXN.

Unfortunately, The Mayan Baths and Xoto cannot be reached by bus; only by taxi or rented car.

Take a trail riding and hot springs tour

How about combining outdoor activities with a relaxing bath in geothermal pool?

If you are that kind of person, then you should not miss the Trail Riding and Hot Springs Tour from San Miguel de Allende.

The pick-up is at 9 am.

You will head to the ranch located outside the town, where local cowboys are waiting for you.

Then, you will take a 2.5-hour trail ride through the Mexican countryside with stunning views of the surroundings.

After that, you will return to the ranch where a delicious meal is waiting for you; a typical Mexican lunch cooked by local ladies.
