It is an easy drive from Reykjavik. The trip takes you about 3 and a half hours from Reykjavik and the landscape is breathtaking. The area has many natural wonders and many amazing places to visit.

Because of the increased geothermal activity, the area looks like a fairytale land covered in mist. The landscape looks like from another world.

I had an overwhelming feeling when I visited this country because of the incredible landscape and unique natural phenomes found here!

Geysir geothermal area, Thingvellir National Park, and Gullfoss waterfall are the most important 3  things to visit when you drive along the Golden Circle.

Iceland Golden Circle Tour

1. Geysir geothermal area

This geothermal area is a unique place in Europe. This tour is in the heart of a geothermal area with lots of chimneys and steaming vents, clay pots, hot pools, and fumaroles.

Most of these attractions could be found in the area close to Laugarvatn village.

Iceland Geysir Area Golden Circle

There is a spa in the village with hot water coming from geothermal springs. The average temperature of the water when came from the ground is about 60 degrees Celsius.

One of the things to see on Golden Circle is the Great Geyser itself.

It is one of the oldest Geysers from Europe and among one of the most well-known in the entire world. The Great Geyser is inactive at this moment, so you won’t have the opportunity to see it erupt.

But no worries! It’s neighbour geyser Strokkur erupts every 10-15 minutes. A powerful water jet is thrown at about 20-40 meters high.

Everything happens very quickly so be prepared and catch the moment!

2. Thingvellir National Park

A good way to start your Iceland Golden Circle Tour is by visiting Thingvellir National Park. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its beauty and unique characteristics. In this untamed and wild landscape was filmed the movie Game of Thrones.

Thingvellir National Park

The location is 45 minutes car drive from Reykjavik and is the first stop on Golden Circle tour. Here, in this park a unique thing happens, the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

This is the only place on earth where these two tectonic plates meet above the surface.

The park is home of huge lava rocks and the area is surrounded by active volcanoes. In the middle of the park sits the largest and one of the most beautiful lakes in Iceland, called Thingvallavatn.

Here, in Thingvellir Park, you can do snorkelling and diving in Silfra waters. It is an exciting way to observe how the two tectonic plates meet underwater and so to check one of the most beautiful things to see on Golden Circle.

3. Gullfoss Waterfall

The last, but not least thing on your Iceland Golden Circle tour is a stop to Gullfoss Waterfall. I have no words to describe this natural wonder. When you see it you remain speechless.

It is a wonderful waterfall with drops and an overall height of about 32 meters. This waterfall did not impress you by its height but by its unique drop.

It is a very powerful waterfall, with an average of 140 cubic meters of water pours down per second during summer.

For sure this waterfall will gain a place in your memories because of its powerful water drop and beautiful rainbows that appear in sunny days over the water.
