Visit the painted monasteries of Bucovina

These unique monuments from Europe are located on the northeastern side of the country and are a symbol of Romanian history. The monasteries were built a few centuries ago by Romanian rulers. After the most important victories in the Ottoman war, the Romanian rulers built a new monastery as a symbol of their power.

The monasteries are decorated with beautiful paintings representing bible scenes and portraits of the saints and of the Romanian ruler who built the place.

The monasteries are still inhabited by orthodox monks and priests, so don’t be surprised if a priest is praying for us!

Drive across Transfagaran and Transalpina

These two roads are one of the best Romania things to do! Both mountain roads are spectacular and give you the unique opportunity to drive along the two highest roads in the country!

Both roads cut the Carpathian Mountains from north to south. Transfagarasan is the second highest road from Romania and has a total length of 90 kilometres and was built by Ceausescu as a strategic road, which links two Romanian provinces: Wallachia and Transylvania.

Transfagarasan has 5 tunnels, 833 bridges and 28 apeducts. Many workers lost their lives building this impressive road.

Transalpina is the highest road from the country, with the highest elevation at 2.145 m above the sea level. The total length of the road is 148 kilometres and is one of the most modern highways from the country. This road also links two Romanian provinces: Oltenia and Transylvania.
