Romania weather is different from one season to another, because it is located in the Balkan Peninsula in the southeastern part of Europe.
What you should know is that Romania has a temperate-continental climate with four seasons as follows:
- Spring from March to May
- Summer from June to August
- Autumn from September to November
- Winter from December to February
A temperate-continental climate means long and hot summers and cold winters. Spring and autumn make the transition between summer and winter.
Romania weather in spring
Spring is considered to be the shoulder season.
During this season, some of the days are rainy and foggy, but in general, the temperatures are perfect for hiking and visiting.
If you consider visiting Romania in spring, we recommend you to do it in late April or in May, when the days are long and sunny, the crowds haven’t arrived yet and the prices are still low.
The main downside is that not all the hotels from the seaside are open because the weather conditions are not perfect for swimming.
This is the ideal time to explore Romania cities and to be somewhere in the middle of nature, to explore the Romanian countryside and its beauties.
Check out our article and find out which are the best things to do in Romania.
Romanian weather in summer
In summer the days are long and hot, around 30 degrees Celsius or even more! There are just a few showers or summer storms but nothing serious to ruin your holiday!
Summer is the peak season! There are a lot of tourists everywhere and the prices go crazy!
Well, when I am saying that there are a lot of tourists, don’t compare this place with Paris or other places from the western part of Europe. We are still in the eastern part, so don’t forget this!
Still, you will need to stay in queues at the most important attractions and be prepared to wait if you go to popular places from all over the country!
Places like Sibiu, Sighisoara or Brasov are on top of tourist attractions, so be patient and enjoy the landscape while waiting in the queue.
And because Romania weather is perfect in summer everybody takes their holiday and plan to visit the most beautiful locations across the country.
Transfagarasan which is one of the highest and spectacular alpine roads from Romania is a very busy attraction during this time of the year!
Driving along this magnificent road is a unique experience which you should not miss! Top Gear filmed an episode on this magnificent road!

It is a very beautiful place and because of the high altitude and the degree of difficulty, the road is open just between the end of May to the beginning of September, depending on the weather conditions!
This too is a very popular place among tourists!
Tip: avoid going here on the weekend because you will wait in the queue for hours!
The other main downside of travelling in summer is the prices. Most of the hotels increase their prices during this time of the year.
This thing is most visible if you go on the Romanian seaside. Here the prices can double or even triple compared with months like May or September.
Generally, we don’t go to the Romanian seaside during summer because we end up paying huge prices for the services you get!
I mean… don’t get me wrong! If you go to the same hotel in May or September you will get the same services at a much lower price!
Romania weather in autumn
Nowhere else in the world is autumn as beautiful as it is in Romania! The colours of the forests and of the fields are spectacular!
The days become shorter and colder! Rainy days are pretty common especially in the second part of autumn and most of the hotels, especially from the seaside close their doors for tourists!
The Transylvanian villages wrapped in the morning mist complete the autumn picture.
Villagers work hard to harvest the fields and the harvest holidays make are a good opportunity to rebond friendships and to entertain the locals.
Autumn, as well as spring, is also considered to be the shoulder season.
Romania weather is perfect for visiting during spring and autumn!
I must tell you that this is one of my favourite periods of the year to visit Romania and especially Transylvania.
This part of the country has such a mystical air and the hills and the forests are really incredible!
We spent some really great moments at a boyar mansion called Zabola The Machine House .
This wonderful place is located in a small village near the Carpathian Mountains, hidden between lush forests and traditional houses.
Everything was just perfect: from the room which makes you feel like a royal in a palace to the very good services and not to mentions the traditional reinvented kitchen… everything was great!
We spend our weekend walking in the forest and reading in the castle’s garden while sipping a glass of wine!
What else do you need for a relaxing weekend?!
Romanian weather in winter
Ski sports and Christmas Markets are the best things you can do during winter.
The days are short and extremely cold, the temperatures usually drop below 0 degrees Celsius.
In some days it might be snowing or raining, depending on the altitude you are.
The ski resorts prepare to meet the tourists. The Christmas markets open their door and everybody is waiting for Santa Claus.
The Sibiu market is one of the most beautiful markets in Europe. In 2019 it was compared with the one from Vienna, just that it is cosier and smaller.
Book your accommodation in advance if you want to explore this magnificent city during the winter holidays!
Find the perfect accommodation for your stay in Sibiu
During this time of the year, we recommend you to visit the Christmas Markets from the big cities, go to a small village and observe the local traditions and culture or practice some winter sports in Romanian mountain resorts.
Each time of the year has its beauty and worth visiting the country more than once in your lifetime. Trust me, once you visit once you will want to come back to discover more.
