Romania in spring: March, April and May
Spring is such a beautiful time to visit Romania. Everything is green, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, the farmers start the fieldwork. A very positive and nice atmosphere is in the air, the best time of year to visit Romania in 2020!
The weather is pretty windy and cold during the spring months. In the mountains and on high altitudes it might snow in March and on low land there might be many rainy days.
Starting with late April the weather becomes warmer and the rainy days are almost gone. Based on our experience, May is the best time to visit Romania. The days are perfect for sightseeing being sunny and long enough, the prices are low and the crowds have not arrived yet.
The main downsides are that Transfagaran, one of the most famous high altitude road from Europe is still closed and the Black Sea is still a little bit too cold for a swim.
Romania in summer: June, July and August
Summer days are long and hot, some of them are terribly hot! Everybody in on holiday, the crowds to the main attractions are huge and traffic jams are often.
Transfagaran is open and worth paying it a visit. It is very impressive! All the tourist attractions are open and everybody is looking for a place to cool off and enjoy the holiday! Jump into the car and do a tour around the country with a few days on the beach!
The seaside resorts are full of people and the prices explode! In Mamaia, a very famous resort at the Black Sea, the nightlife is one of the most vibrant from this part of Europe.
Because of great weather, many consider summering the best time of year to visit Romania in 2020. Well, I disagree, because the prices are high and there are tourists everywhere. You cannot feel the authenticity of the places and the real vibe.
Romania in autumn: September, October and November
In autumn the crowds have gone, the prices drop and a peaceful atmosphere surrounds the country. The autumn mist lay down over the beautiful Transylvanian villages hidden between the hills. The farmers harvest their crops, the colour of the forest are incredible, and the entire nature prepares for winter.
The days become colder and shorter and the nights longer.
In the last years, September had many days with sun and high temperatures. It looked more like a summer month, not an autumn one. It is the best time to plan a tour across the country and to spend some days on the beach.
Romania in winter: December, January and February
I would like to say that during winter, the entire landscape is covered with snow. But unfortunately, it is not true. In the last years only on high altitudes, there is snow. On the rest of the country is just cold and very rare snow.
Still, Romania has some beautiful slopes. The most beautiful mountain resort is Poiana Brasov, located at 190 kilometres away from Bucharest. It is the perfect place for practice sky, snowboard and other winter sports.
If you want to spend some days at a mountain resort, book your accommodation in advance because the prices go crazy around winter holidays and you would not find any room available. If you want to do like us, choose an accommodation that has an outside wooden heated jacuzzi and spend the evening inside the hot water with a glass of wine, surrounded by all that snow and the beautiful landscape.
Usually, January and February are the coldest months of the year. On the seaside, the wind is blowing hardly spreading the snow everywhere.
It is not the best time of year to visit Romania in 2020. But it is the best time to see Romanian traditions during the winter holidays.
To get a good sense of the country I advise you to rent a car and do a complete tour across the country. May and September would be the best months to visit Romania and enjoy its beauty!
