Sicily is the largest island from the Mediterranean Sea with a total population of 5 million people.
With a total surface of 25.700 square kilometres, the island has 2 international and 4 domestic flights airports.
The most important airstrips from the island are Palermo and Catania, both operating international flights.
If you plan to fly to Sicily with low cost airlines you will land on one of the following airports: Trapani or Comiso.
So most probably your flight to Sicily would land on one of these four designated areas.
For domestic flights, you will probably land on Lampedusa and Pantelleria.
Now let me tell you a few words about each of them!
Palermo Falcone Borcellino airport in sicily italy
Formerly known as Punta Raisi airport Palermo is located 35 kilometres northwest of Palermo city.
It is the second-largest airstrip from the island if we take into consideration the number of passengers who transit the area.
Companies like Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Lufthansa and many others operate on this airstrip.
The second-largest Sicily Italy airport can be reached with a rented car, with public transport or by taxi.
You can rent a car directly from the airport, from the designated areas where all the major car rental companies have an office, or you can rent it online and pick up your car from the pickup area.
The second option is better because renting a car in advance means better prices and the possibility to choose the car model you want to rent.

A taxi from the airport to Palermo city might cost you around 35 eur, but check to see if the meter is on.
If not, you have to negotiate with the taxi driver before entering the car.
If you choose the train or bus to get from the arrival terminal to Palermo city, then you should know that the ride takes around 40 minutes.
Unfortunately, if you choose to travel by bus expect delays as these are very frequent.
Catania Fontanarossa Airport “Vincenzo Bellini”
Catania Fontanarossa Airport is the largest from the island and the main gateway to the world.
It is located 15 minutes ride from Catania city centre, in the eastern part of the island.
You can rent a car or take a bus to reach your final destination from Sicily.
There are direct buses from the terminal to Palermo and Taormina.
It took you about 2,5 hours to reach Palermo and 45 minutes to get to Taormina.
Or you simply can ook an airport transfer with the hotel where you book your holiday.
It might not be cheaper, but for sure is stressless.
Taxis are also available outside the arrival terminal but prices might be a little bit high especially if you don’t like to negotiate.
Trapani Birti Airport “Vincenzo Florio”
A popular airport for Sicily Italy if you choose to fly with a low cost airline is Vicenzo Florio.
This Sicily airport is located in the western part of the island, in Birgi, just 8 kilometres away from Trapani and 70 kilometres away from Palermo.
If you choose to fly with Ryanair then you should know that you can choose to land on this airstrip.
Regular buses, taxis and rented cars can be used to reach your hotel or whatever you want to see in Sicily.
Comiso Airport „Pio La Torre”
Another popular landing place for low cost airline is Pio La Torre Comiso airport.
The terminal is was open for commercial flights in May 2013 and is located in the southern part of the island.
The other two airports from the island, Lampedusa and Pantelleria are really small and used just for domestic flights.
Lampedusa is located on a small island near Sicily and Pantelleria is located just 5 minutes ride from the city with the same name.
So, to sum up, there are 4 international and 2 domestic airports on the island serving for commercial purposes.
They are located all over the island, making it easier for you to reach your destination!
The island is large, so first, decide what you want to see and then, based on your itinerary choose on which Sicily airport to land!
