Ecotourism

Ecotourism is the most popular form of tourism from Costa Rica because of the increased number of national parks and protected territories that exist within the borders of this country.

Actually, Costa Rica was among the pioneer in this domain and today the country is one of the very few which can talk about real ecotourism.

More than 50% of the people who visit Costa Rica land in San Jose and include into their tours daily visits into the protected areas and national parks from the country ( Manuel Antonio, Arenal Volcano, and Monteverde Cloud forest being the most popular).

It is true that you have to pay an entrance fee to most of the attractions and credit cards are widely accepted.

There are two types of tickets available at the entrance of the parks: one for residents ( that are cheaper) and another one for tourists.

The high quality of the services and the attention given to preserving nature, flora, and fauna made Costa Rica a popular destination among nature lovers.

Blue Flag Award or Bandera Azul Program

Tourism in Costa Rica is not just about protected areas and parks it is also about wild and beautiful beaches spread across the Pacific Coast and Caribbean side.

The Bandera Azul Program equivalent with Blue Flag Award from Europe is a program with the main purpose of cutting off the negative impact of mass tourism and support local communities in their fight against pollution and nature protection.

The program monitors the quality of the waters, the quality of the beaches, the facilities from the beach, the security of the area as well as the waste policy.

Based on these criteria the beaches are evaluated each year and if everything goes according to the plan, the Bandera Azul award is given.

More and more beaches are interested in obtaining this certification that proves the quality of the waters and the beach but just a few of them get the 5-star distinction.

Voluntary certification program

The program started in 1997 and refers to the concept of environmental sustainability and the ways we can utilize more responsible resources and motivate local communities to take actions in this direction.

The list you have to tick is quite long but the list of the hotels, accommodations, tour operators that obtained this Voluntary certification program is quite long.

Medical tourism

Costa Rica together with other countries from Latin America like Chile, Mexico, Cuba, Panama, Brazil, and Columbia is one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism.

The number of tourists that visited the country for medical tourism exceeds 100.000 people per year and they spend more than 300 million USD for medical procedures and treatments.

Most of the treatments are in the dental care services sector and cosmetic surgeries and the main factors that contribute to the increase of this sector are:

  • lower prices than in the US
  • high quality of services
  • the proximity from the US via air

Conclusion

Costa Rica is one of the most visited countries in Latin America because of its stunning sceneries, sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and high quality of services.

The peak season lasts from December to April, when is the dry season, a period of the year when the prices are higher, the sun is shining brightly and the crowds hurry to national parks and protected areas.
