Although a small country, Costa Rica has more than 5% of the world biodiversity and more than 1.300 kilometres (800 miles) of beaches in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

Nestled in the park with the same name, Manuel Antonio Beach is one of the most popular coastlines in the ocean in Costa Rica.

One of the most beautiful Costa Rican beaches is famous for its stunning views, amazing sunsets and white sandy beach.

Location

Playa Manuel Antonio is located right near Manuel Antonio town on the central Pacific coast, at a close distance to Quepos, the famous fishing spot from the Pacific Ocean coastline.

The beach is about 2 and a half to 3 hours drive from San Jose, the capital of the country.

Besides the forest trails and varied wildlife, Manuel Antonio National Park is home to 3 beautiful beaches.

Just to give you an idea about how beautiful this place is, I want to tell you that in 2011, Forbes named this national park as one of the most beautiful natural parks in the world.

  • Explore the Espadilla Sur Beach and Manuel Antonio beach that are located 30 minutes hike from the park’s main entrance
  • Observe the rainforest wildlife that lives in the national park

Conchal Beach

Ranked as one of the most exotic beaches of Costa Rica, Playa Conchal gets its name from the sand found here that is formed of thousands of millions of small crushed shells.

It is one of the best surf spots in the country, especially if you are a beginner or you are planning to learn more about this water sport.

Playa Conchal is located in the northern part of Guanacaste province right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

You can get to this magnificent Costa Rica beach by bus from the San Jose bus terminal or by car if you follow the Inter-American highway to San Isidro de General until you reach Dominical and from there you have to follow the paved Costera Sur highway to Costa Ballena.

There are two ways to get to this beach: the first one is to drive along the San Isidro de General highway from San Jose and the other way is to drive along the coastal highway from Quepos to the northern part of the country.

Location

Santa Teresa Beach is a remote beach located in the Nicoya Peninsula, far from any city and airport, so getting to this place might be a little challenging.

The fastest way to get to this island is by plane and you have a direct plane from San Jose to Tambor and the flight lasts only 30 minutes and then you have to take a bus or a taxi for another 30 minutes.

And there is the second option and here I am talking about cars, but bear in mind that you also have to take a ferry to Paquera to reach this remote island.

Things to do

Santa Teresa Beach is a great place to relax and reconnect with nature, with many interesting attractions around. Among the most popular ones I would name:

  • Surfing all year round but with best waves between May to December
  • Day trips to Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve, that is located 5 kilometres away from the beach
  • Horse Ride along the beach
  • Observe wildlife, especially birds as there are many species in the area
  • Practice scuba diving, kite surfing and fishing

The easiest way to reach this small beach town from San Jose is by ferry which should be taken from Puntarenas and the journey lasts for about 5 hours.

If you missed the ferry you don’t have to wait for the next one as the Peninsula is linked with the mainland by road and the journey will last longer.

You can reach the area by bus from Limon or from San Jose or you can take a taxi from Puerto Viejo.

San Jose is 220 kilometres away, while the beautiful city of Puerto Viejo is just 8 kilometres away.

My favourite one is Casa Viva Puerto Viejo Costa Rica from Puerto Viejo with its private beach and free parking as well as clean and spacious rooms.

Flamingo Beach

Considered by many as the most developed and beautiful beaches of Costa Rica, Flamingo Beach is definitely a place that has recorded a spectacular transformation and a huge development over the last years.

Flamingo Beach is a place full of all the amenities needed for a beach: beautiful hotels, great restaurants and shops, many water sports options and an amazing sandy beach.

Location

Flamingo Beach is located in Guanacaste province, about one hour drive from the domestic airport Liberia and 4 and a half hours drive from San Jose.

The easiest way to get to the beach from Costa Rica’s capital is to follow the Autopista del Sol also known as the Interamerican Highway to Caldera.

After you pass over Puntarenas, you have to turn left and follow the sign to the Puente de la Amistad and after that the sign to Nicoya until the signs start to show you Flamingo.

This beautiful tropical beach with soft white sand and clear waters attracts many tourists from all over the world.
But besides perfecting your tan, there are plenty of activities to try and things to see while in the area:

Location

This beautiful Costa Rica beach is located in Guanacaste, just 20 minutes away from Liberia domestic airport that operates direct flights from San Jose.

As there are many beaches of Costa Rica called Playa Hermosa including near San Jose and Santa Teresa, this one is known as Playa Hermosa Guanacaste.

This beautiful beach from Guanacaste is located between the town of Playas del Coco and the Playa Panama and is accessible by car.

This long strip of sand is rarely busy so finding the perfect place to put your towel shouldn’t be that complicated.

But when you get bored of perfecting your tan, there are plenty of other interesting activities to do in the area like:

The name of the beach translates into English as “turtle catcher” and comes from the beautiful marine creatures that come here year after year, between July to October to lay their eggs.

Location

One of the wildest beaches in Costa Rica is located on the northern part of the Caribbean coast and is one of the most isolated places in the whole area.

The place is extremely remote and the only two ways to get there are by boat or by plane.

The closest road ends 30 kilometres (20 miles) before you reach the village so from there you have to take a boat for about an hour and reach your final destination.

And the second option is to take a domestic flight that lands in Tortuguero village and from there you can walk to the beach.

This remote area is full of beautiful spots and interesting activities out of which I would name:

  • Visit Tortuguero National Park spread on more than 31.000 hectares and home to a large variety of creatures and plants

  • Take a kayak tour across the rivers and canals from the area
  • Hike Cerro Tortuguero or Turtle Hill which is the highest peak from the area
