Costa Rica weather can be split into two main seasons: the dry season that lasts from December to April and the rainy season from May to November.
Having a tropical climate, the weather in Costa Rica is warm all year round and very stable during the dry season.
Costa Rica temperatures are around 80 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (26-35 degrees Celsius) on the Pacific Coast and Caribbean Coast.
In the mountain area and countryside region temperatures in Costa Rica are generally between 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 26 degrees Celsius).
Weather of Costa Rica during the dry season is characterized by extremely hot days with no rain and less greenery, as the forest and the vegetation suffer because of the lack of water.
On the other hand, the rainy season, or the green season as locals like to call it, is mostly characterized by short showers, lower temperatures, and lush vegetation.
September and October are the wettest months with rains that might last for a few days and floods that might occur in some parts of the country.
What is unique to this tiny Latin American country is that it has very diverse landforms that dictate many microclimates.
Each rainforest and cloud forest, each mountain and volcano has its own microclimate that generally has sunny and warm mornings and a few showers during the afternoon.
That is why it is advisable to have with you a raincoat if you plan to explore the countryside and the mountain area from Costa Rica.
The rains usually last for less than one hour but the outside temperature rapidly decreases by a few degrees.
Costa Rica weather based on location
The climate of Costa Rica is influenced by its location, between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and the altitude.
Let me give you some examples to understand how these things influence the temperatures and the quantity of rain that drops each year.
Let’s start with the Tortuguero area that is located extremely close to the Caribbean Sea and has a very humid climate with a lot of rain all year round, even during the dry season.
Just 280 kilometers (175 miles) from Tortuguero is the Guanacaste Province, right on the Pacific Coast.
This part of the country with its dry tropical forest has a very dry climate, with little rain, being one of the best places to go during the rainy season.
A specific climate has the central valley located close to San Jose, the capital city of the country.
The average temperature in Costa Rica Central Valley is around 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) and a cooling breeze blows all year round.
If you plan to hike the stunning volcanoes and mountains of Costa Rica then you’d better pack up some warm clothes as the average temperature up in the mountains is just 13 degrees Celsius ( 55 degrees Fahrenheit).
The hottest parts of the country are the lowlands, which are located in the coastal area and where the average temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit).
The average temperature in Costa Rica
The average temperature does not vary a lot from one season to another, but it varies from one area to another based on altitude, but generally, it is between 11 to 28 degrees Celsius (52 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit).
Average rainfall in Costa Rica
The quantity of rain that falls across a year does fluctuate a lot based on the season and altitude of the place.
The wettest months are by far September and October, while from May to August and during November, the rains are generally short and most of them fall in the afternoon.
December to April, the high season or the dry season is the time of year with the lowest quantity of rain that drops.
The Caribbean side has its own microclimate, where it rains quite often, but the rains are short and there is no real rainy season at all.

September is one of the rainiest months in this tiny country with the Osa Peninsula being the wettest part of all with heavy rain that usually lasts for many hours.
