Easy Ways to Travel from Bucharest to Brasov

Brasov is a beautiful town located right near one of the most impressive mountains of Romania, the Carpathian mountain.

It is the perfect place to set your camp and explore the nearby attractions.

Medieval towns, untamed nature, fortified churches, beautiful mountain resorts and cosy villages where traditions are still alive are just some of the most interesting things to see in the area.

It is located 180 kilometres away from Bucharest, the capital of Romania and getting from Bucharest to Brasov is not that complicated as it might look at first sight.

There are 3 ways to get to Brasov from Bucharest:

  • By train
  • By bus
  • By car

All of them are easy to use and reliable, but each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

While some offer freedom (the car) others are more relaxing and give you more time to view the scenery (the bus) or not worry about traffic and road events (the train)

One of the most comfortable and safest ways to get to Brasov is by train.

The city is located on an international railway which connects Bucharest North Station with Vienna.

There are multiple trains per day from Bucharest North Station to Brasov.

So, in order to get to Brasov, you first need to get to Bucharest North Station, the main railway station of the city.

If you came directly from the airport, you can take the airport train or more simple, bus 780 from the airport and reach Bucharest North Station in about 30 minutes.

Once you get to Bucharest North station is time to buy your train ticket.

Depending on the type of train chosen (InterRegio, Regio or Regio Express), it might take you from 2 and a half hours to 4 hours to reach Brasov.

But the landscape is very beautiful and time runs very fast, especially when you cross the mountains.

The transportation conditions are reasonable and the train leaves in time from Bucharest station. Small delays in arrival times at Brasov station are common.

The ticket price from Bucharest to Brasov is somewhere between 23 lei ( 5.4 USD) to 45 (10 USD) lei for second class and 35 lei (8.1 USD) to 65 lei (15.1 USD) for first class.

Students have special prices as long as they can prove their status with student ID card.

Beware! During children’s holidays and at weekends trains are pretty busy, so buying tickets in advance is a very good idea.

Bucharest to Brasov bus

Another simple way to get to Brasov from Bucharest is by bus.

There are a lot of buses which connect these two cities and all are owned by private companies.

A bus ride usually takes somewhere between 3 to 6 hours, depending on the number of stops it has.

The main downside of the bus is that it depends on traffic conditions.

And trust me, during weekends, children holiday or public holiday this road might be extremely busy.

So, it might take you much longer to get to Brasov.

The bus tickets from Bucharest to Brasov are more expensive than the train tickets and cost somewhere around 45 lei (10 USD).

A thing to know is that not all companies have special prices for students.

Regarding the departure point, some buses leave directly from the airport to Brasov, while others leave from Bucharest North Station.

The most well-known transportation companies are Memento Bus www.mementobus.com and CDI www.cditransport.ro.

Memento Bus has better transportation conditions but unfortunately does not have daily trips. CDI is not that comfortable but has multiple courses per day.

Bucharest to Brasov by car

Car is my favourite transportation mode.

You know why? Because it gives me the comfort and freedom I need it.

I don’t have to be stressed out by train or bus timetables!

I don’t have to share a small space with strangers!

I have the whole car for myself! I can go wherever I want! I

can do whatever I want! In other words, I can be my own boss.

And besides that, I can have the car directly from the airport! I don’t have to care about how I get in the city, where is the train station and so on.

The price for car rental in Romania for a day starts from 65 lei (15.1 USD) per day.

So if you are a couple, renting a car would be almost as cheap as travelling by train.

But in addition, you will have the freedom to explore Brasov surroundings. And there are many interesting things to see around! Dracula’s Castle, Peles Castle, Viscri village and many other places are waiting to be discovered.

My advice is to rent a car to get from Bucharest to Brasov, especially if you want to explore the Brasov area as Brasov is one of the must-see things when visit Transylvania.

If you are not interested in exploring the villages, the mountain resorts and other attractions outside Brasov, then the train is the best way to get to Brasov.
